No one escapes the sufferings of birth and death, and for those pivotal times Americans have community hospitals. In Lakeland, that hospital is Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, which this year is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
During the past century, the hospital has been known as Morrell Memorial Hospital and Lakeland General Hospital, but the roots go back to Jane Morrell, who in her will deeded land to the city to build a hospital downtown on Massachusetts Avenue. Ten years later, the hospital opened in a new building on a large, city-owned campus off Lakeland Hills Boulevard, which today remains the main campus of the massive Lakeland Regional Health System and of the 897-bed not-for-profit Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
