LAKELAND – The city will examine four downtown locations to build a parking garage city leaders hope will enliven blocks seen as underutilized while addressing the limited amount of all-day parking in the district.
The city is expected to hire Kimley-Horn and Associates, a civil engineering firm, to perform a “due diligence study” to determine the potential costs and uses of the four lots, whose locations offer different advantages and disadvantages.
Three of the areas are privately held:
- The surface lots and Wells Fargo Bank drive-through area on the block south of Main Street between Florida Avenue and Tennessee Avenue.
- The surface parking lot south of Heritage Plaza bordering Orange Street, and Kentucky and Tennessee avenues.
- The lot south of the Florida Citrus Mutual building on Lime Street between Iowa and Massachusetts avenues.
The fourth area of interest, the Lakeland Police Department headquarters’ surface lot on Bay Street, is unique in that it is publicly owned, but also that there is little apparent use for incumbent businesses and organizations.
